02
addressing the elephant

Why didn't I present on "Mob Psycho"?

Because my attention span couldn't survive 37 episodes across 3 seasons.
Because I never even started watching it. Don't tell the committee.
Because the answer is the topic itself: decreasing attention span.

the first slide was a decoy. you caught it. either your attention is fine — or you're just nosy.

03
disclaimer

About the presenter

I have watched 100s of movies — all through recaps.
By 2022, there were no recap videos on YouTube I hadn't already seen.

recap videos are the Subway Surfers of cinema.

04
chapter 01 · the basics

So... what even is an attention span?

And when did it start running away from us?

05
definition

What is an attention span?

Attention span = the length of time you can concentrate on one thing before your brain files a complaint.

It can be trained — and right now it's on a losing streak.
Average human: ~8 seconds. A goldfish scores ~9. Yes, really.
Attention ≠ interest. You're staring. You're not necessarily caring.
"Multitasking" doesn't exist. It's just very fast context-switching.
06
self-diagnosis

Symptoms of a low attention span

Can't watch a video longer than 30 seconds without grabbing your phone.
You watch short videos at 2×... and still skip.
Opened 47 tabs "to read later". Later never came.
Walked into the kitchen. Forgot why. Went back. Forgot again.
A book chapter now feels like a Netflix series commitment.
You've already checked your phone twice since this slide started.

that was the entire quiz. you nodded to 3+? you're cooked.

08
history lesson

A brief history of the decline

1450sThe printing press — people read. Focus was a hobby.
1920sRadio & TV — the first background distraction of their era.
1980sRemote controls — we changed channels but never watched.
2000sThe internet — everything, all at once, always.
2007Smartphones — the brain got a leash.
2016+Short-form video — attention span: it's over.
09
reason 01

Short-form content

Endless feeds. TikTok, Reels, Shorts — a dopamine hit every 15–60 seconds.
The scroll trap. Infinite scroll = your thumb vs. your willpower.
Patience reset. Instant gratification rewrote our waiting settings to 0.
RIP long videos. A 10-minute YouTube video now feels like a documentary.
10
reason 02

Abundance of content

Too many options. Unlimited streaming, feeds, apps, memes. Every second of every day.
Choice overload. We can't pick, so we skim. We never actually read.
Notification storm. The average person gets ~80–100 pings a day.
Snack culture. We snack constantly and never sit down for a meal.
11
reason 03

Dopamine & instant rewards

Variable rewards. You never know if the next video is gold — so you never stop.
FOMO. Missing out on anything, ever, is now a medical condition.
Red-dot panic. A notification is a small red flag your brain treats as a siren.
Dopamine treadmill. The bar for "interesting" rises faster than we can chase it.

the content machine · pt.4

And everything else: the flood

Netflix: 18,000+ titles. You've seen 4 of them.
Prime + Disney+ + HBO + Crunchyroll +... an infinite checklist.
You will never catch up. The content is winning. Accept it.
While you read this slide: ~150 more hours of video uploaded.

there is too much content. obviously.

16
chapter 02 · the "solutions"

The solutions everyone recommends

Pomodoro timer. 25 minutes on, 5 off. You lasted 3 minutes on.
Notion. You built a beautiful focus dashboard. Never opened it again.
Forest app. You planted a tree, got distracted, and it died.
Screen-time limits. You ignore them. So do we.

all of them failed. why? because none of them involve running from a virtual cop.

17
chapter 03 · the real fix

The actual fix

boring video
+
gameplay at the bottom
Subway Surfers & Minecraft parkour — the certified background-champions.
Keeps the reward pathway busy so you can finally finish the actual video.
REAL
18
but seriously

Ok, for real: the actual actual fix

Discipline. Not an app. Boring, consistent, and it actually works.
Self-control. Timer on. Phone in another room. Door closed.
Dopamine reset. Starve the shortcuts. A little boredom reboots the reward system.
Boundaries. One feed, scheduled. Not infinite.

sorry — there is no app for that. the app is you.
